Dr. Kalai Ramea is an accomplished Applied AI scientist. Her doctoral studies focused on developing mathematical models for analyzing climate policies specifically for the state of California. She was chosen to participate
in a competitive Young Scientists Summer Program at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) in Austria, a renowned climate think tank contributing to annual climate action IPCC reports. While at
IIASA, she expanded her research contributions to encompass the North American region. In 2017, Dr. Ramea joined the Palo Alto Research Center (also known as “Xerox PARC”) as an AI Research Scientist. Over the
course of three years, she led the development of numerous cutting-edge AI projects, with funding from major federal agencies including the US Department of Energy, the US Department of Defense’s DARPA, and NASA.
She received recognition for her work with two Innovation Excellence awards (for developing novel augmented reality algorithms and conversational agent design). In 2020, she was promoted to a leadership position at
PARC, overseeing a technical area focused on Applied AI for sciences where she managed a team of ten research scientists and engineers, as well as 5-10 summer interns yearly. Beyond her contributions at PARC, Dr.
Ramea has engaged in several open-source side projects, including (1) the creation of intricate AI-generated artwork, which was showcased at ECCV 2017; (2) a conversational AI chatbot to assist unemployed individuals in
accessing information about benefits during the pandemic, which received three awards during a hackathon. Additionally, in 2019, she was selected as one of the 100 young engineers nationwide to participate in the
prestigious US Frontiers of Engineering Symposium.
